About Mitch

mitch-trotmanI was born and raised here in Abbotsford, BC. I attended Abbotsford Senior Secondary school, along with my 2 brothers. It was also the school my father went to, and as well the school that my grandfather was the Principal of. Some of you may have been given the “strap” by my grandfather back in the day!!

I played almost every sport imaginable throughout my childhood and high school days, but basketball was my one true passion and I eventually went to Simon Fraser University to play there, as well as to study medicine with the hopes of one day becoming an orthopedic surgeon. I was constantly injuring myself in the various sports I played when I was younger.  My mom used to call me a calamity kid as she and I spent many a day in Emergency, physiotherapy offices, sports injury clinics and gyms repairing various sporting injuries.

I had lots of odd jobs as a kid, washing cars at the local car lot, paper routes (uphill all the time it seemed!), picking golf balls up by hand at the local driving range, and as a franchisee of College Pro Painting for several years in University. What a great job that was. I think I learned more running summer painting companies than I did with my nose buried in all those text books in school. I liked being in charge of the decisions of a company over those summers. Let me correct myself…I loved being in charge of my own company over those summers. There is just something I found so satisfying watching your own company grow and become successful, based on what you do, who you hire, and the decisions you make. This is something I wanted to do in my life, build successful companies. In my second year at University, I left the faculty of science, and joined the Business program.

I graduated from SFU in ’96 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a double major in Marketing and International Business. After doing some overseas travelling throughout Europe, Greece, Turkey and remote regions of Indonesia, I returned to Langley and began selling cars at the local Chrysler dealership. I progressed through the business into the financial services office, the Sales Manager’s office, the General Sales Manager’s office, to General Manager (all at Langley Chrysler) and now currently as Dealer Principal at Abbotsford Hyundai and Abbotsford Chrysler.

I am a partner in the Trotman Automotive Group, along with my two brothers, Mike and Brad. We have several automotive brands in our group including Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Hyundai, Toyota, and most recently we have added Equus and Fiat.

I can’t tell you how much I enjoy my career. It is such a fantastic business. The people, including clients, employees and business contacts alike, are what constantly make it enjoyable and different. Let me tell you, there is no shortage of characters in the car business. There are so many unique people in this business both locally and throughout Canada, it truly is great.

While I really enjoy my job, there is nothing I enjoy more than spending time with my family and friends. I have some great buddies, and the best family a guy could ever hope to have.My wife is simply unbelievable.Alison is so supportive of a career that takes some hours and dedication. I absolutely could not do it without her understanding and support. The two of us keep extremely busy with our 3 daughters, not to mention our 4 horses, 2 dogs, 2 cats, a few fish here and there, and Karl the guinea pig thrown in for good measure. The fish change every few months, I can’t keep up with their names; my 3 year old loves feeding them. I heard a guppy can die from eating too much….

When I am not working or chasing my kids all over town to their many and varied activities, I love golfing with my pals, playing hockey, and getting out on either the ocean or the Fraser river with a fishing rod, a few buddies, and a well stocked cooler looking for that 40 lb spring salmon, or some of those legendary sockeye. I love teaching my girls new skills, showing them this fantastic planet and watching them grow into great people. They are the neatest little kids I know. (But of course I’m not biased!!) I like travelling with my wife and kids throughout BC, and the Pacific Northwest. I thoroughly enjoy sharing a nice bottle of red with my lovely wife while I quietly plan the parade route I am sure the Canucks will one day take (hopefully in my lifetime!!) through our world class city with Lord Stanley’s cup.
